VW ID.7 Tourer review: What can the electric station wagon do?

What distinguishes the VW ID.7?

After VW had the first electric cars on the market with the compact ID.3 and the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs, the Wolfsburg-based company followed up with the ID.7 mid-size sedan in 2023. The ID.7 is and has often been compared or even equated with the VW Passat, which is technically incorrect, because it is based on the MEB (Modular Electric Drive Toolkit) – like all other electric cars from Volkswagen. After a good year, VW added the ID.7 line-up to the ID.7 Tourer, the station wagon variant that does not differ technically from the sedan except for the body. Both electric models have a good cd value in common (soda: 0.23; Tourer: 0.24) and large batteries (77 kWh or 86 kWh) for a range suitable for travel – the name "Tourer" says it all.

The powerful rear-wheel drive officially pushes the ID.7 Tourer forward.

Driving in the ID.7 Tourer Pro S is in three words: pleasant, comfortable and quiet. Even very quietly. The whispering glide through the city, across the countryside and on the motorway is silent and efficient. The chassis of the large e-station wagon shows its balanced side in the test, does not rumble around, but whets the appetite for long stages.

The steering – freed from any drive influence thanks to the rear-wheel drive – impresses with an authentic steering feel, feels comfortable even in fast corners, gives a good feeling for the front wheels and conceals the high weight of the ID.7 Tourer (2.3 tonnes). The turning circle is surprisingly small (10.9 metres) – if things get tight, simply turn the steering wheel a little further, and the ID.7 can also master tricky manoeuvring.

Long lead time to VW's first electric station wagon

The ID. Vizzion concept car made the start in 2018 – and already looked quite similar to the ID.7 five years before the market launch. In 2022, the Wolfsburg-based company then upped the ante with the near-production ID. Aero, before the ID.7 finally followed as a production car in 2023.

When braking, the ID.7 naturally recuperates a lot, which makes the brake operation seem a little bit artificial – completely justifiable. On the side of positive acceleration, the ID.7 proliferates with torque. The electric motor on the rear axle is very powerful: a maximum torque of 545 Newton meters is available. The instantaneous electric boost is more than sufficient despite the high weight. Even around the top, the 286 hp electric motor does not run out of breath. Relaxed, but vehement, the electric station wagon pulls to a top speed of 180 km/h. Or rather: 182 km/h according to the speedometer. The ID.7 Tourer could not be persuaded to do more in the test.

To satisfy as many minds as possible, the electric station wagon has four driving modes: "Eco" for particularly energy-saving driving, with a limitation of 130 km/h (unless you press the accelerator pedal completely); "Comfort" with noticeably more power than in Eco, confident without hectic; and "Sport", much more spontaneous in the areas of steering, chassis, acceleration – and with a sound that is also intended to convey the dynamics acoustically. The fourth mode is "Individual", in which everything can be configured according to your own taste, for example the DCC suspension with an unimagined spread from firm and dry to swinging and comfortable.

The engines of the VW ID.7 Tourer at a glance

Version Drive Accumulator Achievement WLTP consumption WLTP range
ID.7 Tourer Pro Electric motor on the rear axle 77 kWh 210 kW (286 hp) 14.4 kWh/100 km up to 605 km
ID.7 Tourer Pro S Electric motor on the rear axle 86 kWh 210 kW (286 hp) 14.0 kWh/100 km up to 690 km
ID.7 Tourer GTX One electric motor each on the front and rear axles 86 kWh 250 kW (340 hp) 16.6 kWh/100 km up to 584 km

How much range does the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S have?

On paper, the ranges of the ID.7 Tourer are a real statement. The "Pro S" version with the large 86 kWh battery has a range of almost 700 kilometres according to WLTP. This corresponds to a consumption of 14 kWh per 100 kilometres. Since we drove the ID.7 Tourer in winter, however, the consumption was far from the WLTP values.

Nevertheless, they are remarkable for an electric car of this size: a good 22 kWh flowed through the cables on average; when driving faster on the motorway, it was 24 kWh. And with an anticipatory and very restrained driving style, the power consumption was 18 kWh – mind you, at temperatures around zero degrees. The ID.7 Tourer masters efficiency without any doubt.

What is the charging power of the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S?

Depending on the installed battery, the maximum charging capacity of the ID.7 Tourer varies. If the smaller 77 kWh battery is on board, the maximum charging power is 175 kW. With the larger 86 kWh electricity storage system, up to 200 kW of charging power is possible. In winter temperatures, the displayed maximum of the ID.7 Tourer Pro S (86 kWh) tested was 188 kW.

If you prefer an electric SUV to an electric station wagon, the ID.4 from Volkswagen is an attractive alternative with a higher seating position.

How much does the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S cost?

The ID.7 Tourer starts at 54,795 euros. Then the electric station wagon rolls forward with the smaller 77 kWh battery. If the longer-range 86 kWh battery is to be located in the underbody of the ID.7 Tourer, the "Pro S" variant must be used. This costs at least 59,785 euros - but also offers a lot of equipment. It must also be mentioned that there is practically no competitive environment. The next competitor is the much more expensive BMW i5 Touring, which costs at least 72,200 euros (81.2 kWh; 340 hp).

What are the dimensions of the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S?

The high shoulder line of the ID.7 Tourer is striking – the station wagon cannot completely hide its drive with the large battery in the undercarriage.

The VW ID.7 Tourer is often compared to the VW Passat. It is still quite a bit larger than the longest-serving VW series. The electric station wagon is almost five meters long and in terms of wheelbase, it tops the Passat by a whole 13 centimeters. Especially in the city, it can sometimes get tight at tight charging station parking spaces. Inevitably, the ID.7 Tourer then stands diagonally in the gap.

  • Length: 4.96 meters
  • Width: 1.86 meters
  • Height: 1.55 meters
  • Wheelbase: 2.97 meters

How much luggage can I store in the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S?

Plenty of space for luggage. For an electric car, the ID.7 Tourer offers a generous trunk volume.

Although the ID.7 Tourer is at a disadvantage in terms of design compared to the VW Passat in terms of luggage compartment because it has the engine on the rear axle, the luggage compartment volume is fully suitable for holidays. With the rear seat backrest standing upright, it is 605 litres, with the backrest folded down, 1,714 litres are waiting to be filled – and thus even a little more than the BMW i5 Touring (570 litres/1,700 litres). The load compartment length of the ID.7 Tourer is also positive: 1,948 millimetres can be accommodated between the front seats and the boot lid.

If the towbar is installed for an extra 1,050 euros, the ID.7 Tourer Pro S can tow up to 1.2 tonnes (braked, at eight percent).

What does the interior of the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S look like?

The cockpit of the ID.7 Tourer is clearly designed. The small screen in front of the steering wheel provides information about the most important driving data. In addition, there is a large head-up display.

There is one thing in abundance in the interior of the ID.7 Tourer: space. Even very tall people will find excellent space here. The ergonomics are also impeccable. And what is usually limited to the front seats in other vehicles with these attributes also applies to the second row of seats in the large VW e-estate. The long wheelbase has a positive effect – with this station wagon, four tall adults can travel with luggage. Terrific!

The remaining ingredients are a mix of all VW model series: 15-inch touchscreen with illuminated touch sliders for temperature and volume, a standard head-up display with augmented reality functions – and of course the current infotainment generation from VW with intuitive operation, the good voice recognition IDA and customization options. Everything is functional and simply designed, understandable, even without much prior knowledge.

However, a few things dampen the joy somewhat: The touch fields on the steering wheel have already been sorted out in other VW model series in favor of real buttons, but have apparently been provided with a new operating logic. This is joined by the two window regulators with touch switching function from front to back. Incorrect operation is inevitable.

Vorbildlich!

Die Vor- und Nachteile des VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S

My conclusion on the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S

In terms of driving, everything fits the ID.7 Tourer Pro S without exception. The efficiency of VW's first electric station wagon is at a very high level, the charging power of 200 kW is up to date and long-distance comfort is given without restriction in all seats. In addition, the trunk of the ID.7 Tourer is large – as you would expect from a station wagon.

No question: This is a very good electric station wagon. This should make the ID.7 Tourer worth a close look for anyone who doesn't like an electric SUV but still wants to buy a fully electric and spacious car.
